Connections Radio Presents Mark Gerzon “Global Intelligence”

Jordan Paul & Cynthia JamesMark GerzonMark Gerzon is renowned for the conflict resolution skills he brings to hot spots around the world. From these experiences comes his idea of Global Intelligence (GQ). As distinct from Emotional Intelligence (EQ) or Intellectual Intelligence (IQ), GQ is the intelligence we need to manage our planet.

Mark believes that because we’re all connected, striving for a sense of global oneness, or global connection, needs the same universal set of principles such as compassion and caring, that we feel for our own family and community members.

He cautions us, “I’m all in favor of spiritual and philosophical statements of oneness but unless we transform how we deal with conflict, oneness comes to a screeching halt as soon as we come up against differences of opinion.”

Mark’s ideas are deeply grounded in his own personal work and he talks about the difficulties he has encountered when he doesn’t walk his talk. He says, “One of my favorite mantras are Gandhi’s words, ‘Be the change that you want to see in the world.’ If I don’t stay grounded in my own spiritual practice with myself and my family, I lose myself.”

Mark strongly believes that spiritual practice is directly related to what is needed to change the way politics is practiced in our country today. He says,
“Politics involves being attached to a point of view and thinking that our point of view is better than someone elses. Meditation and spiritual practice is about freeing ourselves, becoming centered and getting some distance and perspective on our points of view. Like walking on two feet, they are counterparts.

“If I forget my spiritual practice I start to believe that my points of view are, ‘the truth’ and I become arrogant and self-righteous. My political self says ‘I believe in my ideas and ideals and I’m going to stand up and fight for them. My spiritual self says, ‘Yes, but the person on the other side of this issue, is a human being and although we may be on different sides, we are all children of God and deserve to be respected. The challenge is to hold both of those truths in our hearts at the same time.”

Two of the basic skills that Mark teaches are, Witnessing and Unlearning. The question to be answered in Witnessing is, ”Am I actually seeing the whole world (the whole issue) or just a part of the world?” This informs us about the scale of our thinking. Unlearning our false beliefs is essential for witnessing the whole earth, and seeing not just what is culturally true but what is globally true.

Mark Gerzon is Founder and President of Mediators Foundation, an institution that is designed for learning the skills to bridge differences and creating oneness. Mark is also a UN mediator and leadership trainer who has worked all over the world in areas of conflict. In the United States, he is a pioneer in designing and facilitating Democratic-Republican dialogues, and was chief facilitator of the first two Bipartisan Congressional Retreats for the US House of Representatives.

Mark’s most recent work is chronicled in, Leading Through Conflict (Harvard Business School Press) and American Citizen, Global Citizen: How expanding our identities can make us safer, wiser, healthier – and builds a better world (SpiritScope Publications). The “Energizer Bunny” is not how most people would characterize their doctor. But Dr. James Rouse isn’t your average doc. He’s a man affectionately referred to by colleagues as “superhuman.”

As a QVC Network Wellness Specialist, triathlete, certified yoga instructor, founder of the magazine “Optimum Wellness,” speaker and author, Dr. James does it all. He lives with such enthusiasm and conviction about the wellness lifestyle that everyone he touches comes away feeling inspired to enjoy taking better care of themselves. But most importantly, his personal lifestyle and work are guided by Gandhi’s words, “Your life is your message.”

He expresses the bedrock of his teaching as, “When oneness and mindfulness are practiced together, every experience is an opportunity for deeper wellness. Consider that in every experience there is more than just you at work. For example, when you open the refrigerator door know that you are eating not just for you, but for you and the Divine You. Therefore, self-love is not selfish. Self-care honors the oneness in yourself and keeps that connection with everything around you. Self-care is an act of self-love”

Dr. James openly shares his personal life. “I’m a student of my own life. Whenever challenges arise I check-in by asking myself, ‘ What’s happening right here, right now?’ I know that it’s about what I want to bring forth in my life and in the next moment I’m seeing things in a way that points me in a new direction.”

He says that, “We’re all too tired to keep running and many of us are too scared to stop. Fitting oneness into the pace of life is why I love being on QVC. The audience is hungry for new information and products for moving into a more holistic way of living. My products are primarily natural and designed to fit into busy lifestyles. By making it easy to take better care of yourself, you enjoy greater success and your integrity, confidence and self-esteem are enhanced.

James says that, “The most powerful message I teach is learning to practice willingness rather than will power. When I practice willingness I know and trust the practicing of oneness. This creates vitality in my body and clarity and brilliance in my mind. Eating well, effortless exercising and my best work follow naturally. Beauty and love are my daily experience and the sky’s the limit.”

James is best known for his highly engaging “Optimum Wellness” TV segments, which he hosts in major markets including Los Angeles, Seattle and Denver. His wellness knowledge and passion for helping others live optimally extends to creating healthy food products. As the Wellness Specialist on QVC Shopping Network, Dr. James recently launched a line of nutritional products, including Mix1, an all-natural meal-replacement drink.

His books include: Grow Your Life from Average to Amazing; and Health Solutions for Energy and the Colorado Fit Kitchen Cookbook which he co-authored with his wife Dr. Debra Rouse.

Connections Radio Presents “Spiritually Motivated Activism”

Listen NowListen NowSubscribeConnections Radio on Facebook

Jordan Paul & Cynthia JamesDr. Barbara FieldsMore that just talking about a more peaceful planet, as the Executive Director of the Association for Global New Thought (AGNT), Dr. Barbara Fields is passionately working to implement and create programs that engage more and more organizational and citizen participation in manifesting our most cherished goal.

One such program introduces a new perspective on AGNT’s Seasons for Peace and Nonviolence that Barbara calls, “Meta-civics.”  Meta-civics combines local engagement with a central unifying vision, thus engaging enlightened citizen activism at the omni-local level. In this way, leaders in every community have the opportunity to rise and react to the unique needs of their own community while still feeling part of a larger whole; communications are dynamically local and global.

On a personal level Barbara shares a few of the things that she does to live a balanced life. She says, “The most important thing in living in greater oneness is paying conscious attention to keeping myself an open system. I constantly seek opportunities to expose myself to new people, new opportunities, and entirely different milieus and thought communities. If you get so embroiled in your own story or your own path that you can’t learn anything new, you lose your perspective about what’s reality. You can’t just surround yourself with yourself, there’s a synergistic component to healing the planet, and that means listening to many voices and following many streams.”

Barbara closes her interview with what she sees as our greatest opportunity: “Right now, for those of us who are hoping, aspiring, and wanting to awaken, we must not avoid the fact that we all share a responsibility for our planet. Understanding that it’s our responsibility will motivate us to engage; engagement empowers us and fulfills our purpose for being here. Practicing how to be more enlightened citizens on the planet, we need to evolve beyond the dialogue and vision stages to reach our full potential. That’s what AGNT is offering.”

In addition to being Executive Director of the Association for Global New Thought, Barbara is co-founder and Project Director of The Gandhi King Season for Nonviolence, the Synthesis Dialogues I, II, and III with His Holiness, the Dalai Lama of Tibet. Barbara was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the Holmes Institute of Consciousness Studies, and is recipient of honors including the Peace Museum’s Peacemaker Award, International Centers for Spiritual Living’s first Peace Award, and The Gandhi King Ikeda Peace Award from Morehouse College. She can be contacted at  www.agnt.org
